The United Kingdom is fortunate enough
to be home to not one, but two excellent South African
Dance companies.
Uthingo is a Zulu word for 'Rainbow' and in Zulu
tradition, the Princess of the Rainbow oversees
and blesses the planting and fruition of all kinds
of seeds.
This dance company was founded in 1983 with the
aim of sowing the seeds of South African culture
around the world. The Zulu name, Shikisha, means
'belt it out, sing and dance like you never sang
and danced before' which is exactly what this all-female
band have been doing for the past twenty years now.
Both these talented groups bring the extraordinarily
powerful traditional drum rhythms, dance, and song
from the very heart of South Africa. With their
stunning traditional costumes they present pieces
which include the Zulu war dances, Shangaan, Xhosa
and Sotho dances with stunning energy and intensity.
